A Moroccan football expert has criticised the Confederation of African Football's decision to name Ademola Lookman Player of the Year ahead of Hakimi Achraf.

The article discusses the controversy surrounding the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision to award the 2023 African Footballer of the Year to Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen instead of Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi. Moroccan football journalist Saad Alami criticized CAF's choice, arguing that Hakimi, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain and has been pivotal in both club and international matches, deserved the award more than Osimhen. Alami highlighted Hakimi's significant contributions, including his role in Morocco's historic semi-final run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and questioned the criteria used by CAF for selecting the Player of the Year, suggesting that the decision might reflect a bias towards forwards over defenders.
