As the Nations League returns this week with the play-off and knockout stages of the competition, BBC Sport outlines how the format works.

The 2024-25 UEFA Nations League will feature a new format with 16 teams advancing to the knockout phase, which includes quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final, all played in March 2025. The competition will start with a league phase in September, October, and November 2024, where teams are divided into four leagues (A, B, C, and D) based on their previous performances. League A will consist of 16 teams in four groups of four, with winners advancing directly to the quarter-finals. Teams finishing third in League A will be relegated to League B, while winners from League B will be promoted to League A. Similarly, promotion and relegation will occur between Leagues B, C, and D. The knockout phase will be hosted by one of the nations of the teams involved, with the final four teams competing in a host country yet to be determined. This format aims to increase competitiveness and provide more meaningful matches, with the added excitement of promotion and relegation across all leagues.
