Reigning champ Malinin of US leads Japan's Kagiyama at figure skating world championships

American figure skating sensation Ilia Malinin sheepishly grinned when his closest rival, Japanese star Yuma Kagiyama, said what seems to be on everyone's minds


At the Figure Skating World Championships held on March 28, 2025, in Boston, Ilia Malinin of the United States, the reigning champion, took the lead in the men's short program with a score of 106.90 points. He showcased a quadruple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, a quadruple loop, and a triple Axel, despite a slight error on the latter. Japan's Yuma Kagiyama followed closely with 106.26 points, performing a quadruple Salchow-triple toe loop, a quadruple toe loop, and a triple Axel. Shoma Uno, also from Japan, secured third place with 100.20 points, featuring a quadruple flip-triple toe loop, a quadruple toe loop, and a triple Axel. The competition was marked by high technical difficulty and strong performances, setting the stage for an exciting free skate.
