Anita Alvarez made global headlines after her near-death experience during a competition. She rebounded to win a medal and just joined the Air Force — but won't stop competing.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, U.S. Olympic swimmer Anita Alvarez, who nearly drowned during a competition at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest in June 2022, shared that she is thriving in a new chapter of her life as an Air Force recruit. Alvarez, who was dramatically rescued by her coach Andrea Fuentes after losing consciousness in the pool, expressed gratitude for the support she received and emphasized her focus on moving forward. Now stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Alvarez is embracing her new role and the opportunity to serve her country, while also reflecting on her swimming career and the incident that could have ended it. She remains determined and optimistic about her future, both in and out of the water.
