Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) is implementing a new clear bag policy for all sporting events held on school property, effective immediately. This measure, designed to enhance safety and security for students, staff, and attendees, follows similar protocols adopted by numerous professional sports teams and collegiate institutions nationwide. The change aims to streamline the entry process while significantly reducing the risk of prohibited items entering venues.

The decision comes after considerable deliberation and consultation with law enforcement agencies and APS security personnel. While no specific threat prompted the policy shift, district officials emphasized a proactive approach to ensuring a safe environment for everyone involved in school athletics. "Our priority is always the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members," stated APS spokesperson Katie Belair in an official statement. “This clear bag policy is one step we’re taking to help us achieve that goal.”

What's Allowed & What Isn't:

The new policy outlines specific guidelines regarding permissible bags. Only clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags measuring 12” x 6” x 12” are permitted. This size restriction is crucial for efficient bag checks and to prevent oversized items from being concealed. One small clutch purse (no larger than 4.5" x 6.5") is also allowed per person, along with necessary medical supplies.

Items prohibited from entry include: backpacks, large purses, briefcases, fanny packs, camera bags, binocular cases, and any bag that does not meet the clear bag requirements. Exceptions will be made only for medically necessary items, which must be presented for inspection upon arrival. These exceptions require a reasonable amount of time to inspect and may cause delays in entry.

Why the Change? A National Trend & Enhanced Security:

The move by APS aligns with a growing trend across the country. Professional sports leagues like the NFL and MLB, as well as numerous college athletic programs, have already implemented similar clear bag policies. These measures are largely driven by concerns about potential security threats and the desire to expedite entry procedures at crowded events. Clear bags allow security personnel to quickly and easily identify contents without time-consuming searches, reducing congestion and improving overall efficiency.

"Clear bag policies significantly enhance our ability to detect prohibited items," explained Sergeant Tommy Garcia of the Albuquerque Police Department’s School Resource Officer Unit, who collaborated with APS on the implementation plan. "It allows us to see what's inside at a glance, which makes security checks much faster and more effective." He further emphasized that while the policy isn’t foolproof, it acts as a deterrent and provides an added layer of protection.

Impact on Attendees & Enforcement:

APS acknowledges that this change may require some adjustments for attendees. The district encourages fans to review the complete bag policy details available on the APS website (aps.edu) before attending events. Signage will also be prominently displayed at all sporting venues outlining the restrictions.

Enforcement of the new policy will be handled by APS security personnel and, when necessary, law enforcement officers. Individuals attempting to enter with prohibited bags will be asked to return them to their vehicles or dispose of them. While officials are aiming for a smooth transition, they stress that compliance is mandatory.

“We are constantly evaluating our security procedures and looking for ways to improve,” Belair stated. “The clear bag policy is a proactive step, but it’s part of a larger effort to create a safe and supportive learning environment for all APS students.”
