Weather alters VHSL state championships for this weekend

  • A handful of student-athletes from across the state will go for state titles this weekend, but Mother Nature is forcing some schedule changes in several sports.

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) State Championships scheduled for this weekend have been significantly impacted by adverse weather conditions. Due to the forecast of rain and cold temperatures, several events have been rescheduled or relocated. The Class 1 and Class 2 Indoor Track Championships, originally set for Saturday, have been moved to Monday, February 27, 2023, at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The Class 3 and Class 4 Championships will now take place on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the same venue. Additionally, the Class 5 and Class 6 Championships, initially planned for Sunday, have been postponed to Wednesday, March 1, 2023. The VHSL has also made adjustments for other sports; for instance, the Class 1 and Class 2 boys' basketball semifinals have been shifted to Saturday, with the finals now on Monday. These changes aim to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators while still allowing the championships to proceed.
