Broncos Prioritize Offensive Line in Free Agency

Offensive Line: The Priority

The Broncos' offensive line struggled at times in 2023, hindering both the running game and pass protection. Addressing this remains the most pressing need. Kevin Zeitler, a veteran guard, consistently ranks among the league's best at his position. His experience and reliability would provide immediate stability and significantly improve run blocking, benefiting Javonte Williams and the entire offense. Zeitler's pass protection skills are equally valuable, shielding quarterback Bo Nix. Another intriguing option is Trent Brown, a powerful offensive tackle who, while having some inconsistency in his career, offers significant upside as a potential bookend tackle if he can stay healthy. Though reports suggest he might be seeking a substantial contract, his presence could transform the Broncos' pass protection.

Beyond these two, revisiting Dalton Risner is a smart move. A familiar face from previous seasons, Risner understands the Denver system and provides valuable depth - or potentially a starting role if the team doesn't pursue a bigger splash.

Revamping the Pass Rush

The Broncos' pass rush, while showing flashes of potential, lacked consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Adding another dynamic edge rusher is paramount. Jadeveon Clowney, coming off a solid 9.5 sack season with the Browns, presents a low-risk, high-reward signing. His experience and proven ability to generate pressure would complement the existing edge rushers. However, the biggest gamble - and potentially the biggest reward - remains Chase Young. Young's career trajectory has been hampered by injuries, but his talent is undeniable. If the Broncos' medical staff believes they can get him healthy and unlock his potential, he could become a dominant force. A structured contract with performance incentives would mitigate the risk. Furthermore, Tyrell Basham represents a reliable rotational pass rusher who can contribute consistently.

Defensive Backfield and Linebacker Depth

While the Broncos invested in their secondary in previous drafts, adding a proven veteran like Justin Simmons would provide leadership and playmaking ability. His ball-hawking skills and coverage abilities would be a welcome addition. Simmons' departure from Denver was a surprise, and a reunion could provide a significant boost to the secondary. On the second level, Bobby Wagner, despite his age, remains a tackling machine and a vocal leader. While the Broncos have young linebackers developing, Wagner's experience and game intelligence would be invaluable, particularly in a division with several potent running offenses. Adrian Phillips offers valuable depth at safety, providing insurance against injuries and a capable player in multiple defensive schemes.

Interior Defensive Line Reinforcements

Strengthening the run defense is also crucial. Jarran Reed is a proven run-stopping defensive tackle who can collapse the pocket and disrupt opposing offenses. While not a flashy pass rusher, he's a reliable and consistent presence in the trenches.

The Broncos' success in 2024 hinges on smartly utilizing their remaining resources. While the draft laid a foundation, these free agent additions could provide the veteran leadership and targeted skill upgrades needed to propel the team back into playoff contention. George Paton has a tough task ahead, balancing immediate needs with long-term roster construction, but the right moves could dramatically alter the Broncos' trajectory.
