China's BYD shows off new sports car amid tight competition with Tesla as Elon prepares to return
China's BYD launched a new high-end sports car called the Denza Z on Wednesday at Auto Shanghai, going after the same luxury segment owned by Porsche and Mercedes. The car sat under a black cover on the show floor before being unveiled.
China's BYD, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer, unveiled its new sports car, the Yangwang U9, at the Guangzhou auto show, intensifying competition with Tesla as Elon Musk prepares for his return to China. The Yangwang U9, priced at approximately $140,000, boasts impressive performance capabilities, including a 0-60 mph acceleration in under 3 seconds and a top speed of 192 mph. This launch comes at a time when Tesla is facing increased competition in the Chinese market, with BYD surpassing Tesla in electric vehicle sales in the fourth quarter of 2023. As Elon Musk plans to visit China to meet with senior officials and discuss Tesla's future in the region, the introduction of the Yangwang U9 underscores BYD's ambition to challenge Tesla's dominance in the high-performance electric vehicle segment.
