Hong Kong Spends Rs 76 Lakh On Panda Renaming Contest, Ends Up Retaining Original Names

Hong Kong spent approximately Rs 76 lakh (around $90,000) on a contest to rename three giant pandas at Ocean Park, but the public ultimately chose to retain their original names. The pandas, An An, Jia Jia, and Kai Kai, were part of a naming competition where participants could vote for new names or keep the existing ones. Despite the significant expenditure, the majority of the 170,000 votes cast favored keeping the names An An, Jia Jia, and Kai Kai, which were given by the China Wildlife Conservation Association when the pandas arrived in Hong Kong. The contest was intended to engage the public and raise awareness about wildlife conservation, but it ended with the pandas retaining their original names.
