The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) chess team excelled at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championship held in Columbus, Ohio, securing a second-place finish in the President's Cup. The team, consisting of players like Grandmaster Isan Ortiz, International Master Christopher Shen, and others, competed against 48 teams from various universities. UTRGV's performance was highlighted by their strong showing in the final round, where they defeated the University of Texas at Dallas, the defending champions. This victory was particularly notable as UTRGV was the only team to beat UT Dallas in the tournament. Additionally, UTRGV players earned individual accolades with Ortiz and Shen finishing in the top 10, and the team also won the Pan-American Blitz Championship.
