  • The lack of competition in recent All-Star games forced the NBA to partake in a new format for the 2025 iteration of the event. Letting go of the traditional matchup, the league is instead opting for a tournament-style extravaganza.

The NBA has introduced a new format for the Rising Stars event during the All-Star weekend, replacing the traditional rookie vs. sophomore game with a tournament-style competition. This year's event features four teams, each led by a notable NBA figure: Pau Gasol, Tamika Catchings, Jalen Rose, and Detlef Schrempf. The teams consist of 11 rookies, 10 sophomores, and seven G League players, showcasing a mix of emerging talent. The tournament will be a single-elimination format, with games played to a target score of 40, except for the final game which will be to 25. This change aims to add excitement and competitiveness to the event, allowing for more player involvement and a different dynamic in showcasing young talent. The Rising Stars event is set to take place on February 16, 2024, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
