Montgomery Whitewater to Host Two Exciting Competitions at Site 2 This Week
By Sarah Thompson – WSFA News Desk
October 8, 2025
Montgomery’s growing reputation as a hub for water‑sports enthusiasts is about to get a boost when the city’s premier whitewater outfit, Montgomery Whitewater, announces that it will be running not one, but two competitions this week at its Site 2 location. The events, slated for Thursday and Saturday, are part of a larger series of regional races that will culminate in the Alabama State Championships later this month. Local paddlers, coaches, and families are already lining up to witness the action – and to secure a spot in the state‑wide event.
What Is Site 2?
Site 2 is the newer, more technical stretch of the Montgomery River Whitewater Park, an 18‑mile stretch of the North River that has been developed over the last decade into a world‑class training and competition venue. It features a series of whitewater obstacles that range from moderate riffles to steeper drops, making it ideal for both novices and seasoned athletes. Montgomery Whitewater’s official site describes Site 2 as “the place where paddlers can push their limits in a safe, controlled environment.” You can see the layout of the course here: https://montgomerywhitewater.org/site2.
The Two Competitions
1. The Junior Sprint (Thursday, 9:00 a.m.)
The first event is a Junior Sprint, designed for paddlers aged 12‑15. The race covers a 400‑meter straight‑away course that tests speed, technique, and the ability to navigate the more aggressive waves of Site 2. The event is open to all local clubs, but the primary competitors will be the youth teams from Montgomery High School, St. Thomas Aquinas, and the newly formed River Runners Junior Club.
According to club coach Jamie Larkin, the Junior Sprint is “an excellent opportunity for our younger athletes to gain racing experience under the guidance of experienced coaches.” Larkin added that the event will serve as a “pre‑season test” for athletes who are aiming to qualify for the state championship later in October.
2. The Adult Relay (Saturday, 1:00 p.m.)
The second event, scheduled for Saturday, is the Adult Relay, a 600‑meter team race that pits four‑person squads against one another. Each team member must paddle the full distance before tagging the next racer. The relay takes place on a more technically demanding section of Site 2, featuring a 3‑meter drop that will require careful teamwork and precise timing.
The adult relay will feature teams from the Montgomery Paddle Club, River Edge Kayak Team, and a mixed‑gender squad from the local university. The race is not only a test of skill but also of strategy, as teams will have to decide how to allocate their strongest paddlers for the fastest overall time. “We’re really excited to see how the teams adapt their strategies,” said Ethan Patel, a former state champion who will serve as a judge for the relay.
How to Watch and Participate
The events are open to the public, and tickets can be purchased in advance via the Montgomery Whitewater event page: https://montgomerywhitewater.org/events. Local schools are encouraged to bring their students to the sidelines, where they can receive coaching tips from the paddling pros.
For those interested in registering their own team or signing up for the Junior Sprint, the official registration page is live. The deadline for entries is Friday, 5 p.m.. Late registrations will be accepted on a first‑come, first‑served basis, but “space is limited,” warned Montgomery Whitewater president Lisa Martinez in a recent interview.
Behind the Scenes: A Look at the Course
Montgomery Whitewater’s website provides a detailed breakdown of the course conditions, including water levels, current speeds, and recommended gear. On October 6, a live feed was posted showing the course’s flow and obstacle placement. The feed can be viewed here: https://montgomerywhitewater.org/stream.
The organization has also highlighted safety protocols for the competitions. All participants are required to wear a certified personal flotation device (PFD) and helmet. In addition, a medical crew will be on standby at the finish line, and the race will be conducted under the supervision of the Alabama Kayak Association, whose regulations govern all sanctioned events in the state. More details on the safety guidelines can be found at the Alabama Kayak Association’s official site: https://alaska.org/safety.
The Bigger Picture: State Championships and Community Growth
Montgomery Whitewater’s decision to host two high‑profile competitions at Site 2 is part of a broader initiative to position the city as a premier destination for water‑sports. The Alabama State Championships, scheduled for October 30–31 at the same venue, will draw top athletes from across the state and bring additional media attention. The city’s mayor, John Carter, has expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming events. “Montgomery has long been a quiet corner of the state. By investing in sports infrastructure and events like these, we’re showcasing our community’s vitality and welcoming visitors to experience what we have to offer.”
Wrap‑Up
Montgomery Whitewater’s upcoming competitions at Site 2 promise a thrilling weekend for athletes and fans alike. With a Junior Sprint and an Adult Relay set to push competitors to the limit, the city’s water‑sports community is ready to ride the wave into the state championships. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler, a parent cheering on a child, or simply a fan of high‑energy sport, the Saturday and Thursday races are not to be missed.
