GCU to Host Expanded 2026 MLB Desert Invitational

PHOENIX - Grand Canyon University (GCU) is significantly expanding its role in Major League Baseball preparation, hosting the 2026 MLB Desert Invitational - a considerably larger event than the inaugural 2024 edition. Building on the success of the earlier invitational, the 2026 iteration will feature eight Major League teams, increased game density, and enhanced fan experiences, solidifying Phoenix's status as a key spring training and pre-season hub.
Following the widely-attended and lauded 2024 event - which included the Mariners, Rockies, Padres, Dodgers, and Angels - the 2026 Invitational promises an even more compelling spectacle. Confirmed participants for 2026 include the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, and the newly added San Francisco Giants. This broad representation provides fans with a diverse range of matchups and talent.
"The 2024 Desert Invitational was a resounding success, demonstrating the incredible enthusiasm Phoenix has for Major League Baseball," stated GCU Athletics Director Mike Bobinski in a press conference held earlier today. "We've listened to fan feedback, collaborated closely with MLB, and worked tirelessly to create an even more dynamic and engaging experience for 2026. Increasing the number of participating teams and expanding the schedule allows us to offer unparalleled value and excitement."
The Invitational, scheduled for February 20-26, 2026, will utilize GCU Ballpark as its primary venue, with potential overflow games at nearby Sloan Park, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The schedule will feature a round-robin format, ensuring each team plays a minimum of four games. Advanced analytics will be used to strategically pair teams for compelling contests, prioritizing competitive balance and maximizing fan interest. The exact game schedule, including timings and detailed matchups, is expected to be released in late November 2025.
Beyond the on-field action, the 2026 Desert Invitational will feature a significant increase in fan engagement activities. These additions include interactive fan zones with team-specific merchandise, player autograph sessions (subject to player availability), batting cage demonstrations, and a dedicated area for younger fans, featuring youth baseball clinics led by former professional players. A new partnership with a local culinary group will provide a diverse range of food and beverage options, catering to a wider spectrum of tastes.
"We want this to be more than just a baseball tournament," added Bobinski. "It's about creating a festival atmosphere, celebrating baseball culture, and showcasing the vibrant community of Phoenix."
Tickets for the 2026 MLB Desert Invitational will go on sale November 15th, 2025, through GCUBallpark.com and Ticketmaster. Early bird pricing and package deals will be available for a limited time. Demand is expected to be high, given the expanded scope and increased team participation. GCU has also partnered with several local hotels to offer exclusive accommodation packages for visiting fans.
The university's investment in the Desert Invitational underscores its commitment to fostering a strong relationship with MLB and strengthening Phoenix's position as a premier destination for baseball events. The 2026 iteration is poised to be the largest and most impactful Desert Invitational to date, promising a memorable experience for fans and a valuable pre-season preparation opportunity for participating teams. Organizers are already anticipating record attendance and significant economic impact for the Phoenix area. With the inclusion of the San Francisco Giants, a team with a massive fanbase, ticket sales are predicted to be exceptionally competitive.
