Sport for Refugees Coalition Welcomes New Co-Convenor
Locales: SWITZERLAND, UNITED STATES, CANADA

Geneva, Switzerland - February 1st, 2026 - The Sport for Refugees Coalition today announced a pivotal leadership change, with Soccer Without Borders (SWB) officially assuming the role of co-convenor alongside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This development, heralded by both organizations, marks a significant step forward in leveraging the transformative power of sport to support the world's growing refugee and displaced populations.
The Sport for Refugees Coalition, established in 2016, has long served as a vital nexus for organizations dedicated to utilizing sport as a tool for positive social change. Its mission is multifaceted: to promote the integration of refugees into host communities, to bolster their resilience in the face of trauma and displacement, and, crucially, to offer a beacon of hope amidst challenging circumstances. The Coalition's strength lies in its diverse membership, bringing together international sports federations like FIFA and the IOC, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working directly with refugees, governmental bodies responsible for refugee support, and a multitude of other stakeholders.
SWB's appointment as co-convenor is not merely a symbolic gesture; it represents a strategic alignment of values and expertise. For over two decades, SWB has been at the forefront of grassroots sports programming, specializing in utilizing soccer as a catalyst for empowering marginalized youth. The organization's history is rooted in building community through sport, offering not just athletic training but also vital educational support and mentorship opportunities. This holistic approach resonates deeply with the Coalition's emphasis on sustainable, impactful programs that address the complex needs of displaced communities.
"This is a very proud moment for Soccer Without Borders," stated Ben Brown, Executive Director of SWB, in a press conference earlier today. "We've long admired the work of the Sport for Refugees Coalition and the tireless dedication of UNHCR. To now join them as a co-convenor is an incredible opportunity to amplify our collective impact and reach even more individuals who could benefit from the power of sport."
Beyond the Game: The Broader Impact of Sport for Refugees
The work of the Coalition extends far beyond simply providing access to recreational activities. Sport offers a unique platform for psychosocial support, helping refugees cope with the emotional and psychological scars of displacement. Team sports, in particular, foster a sense of belonging, build social networks, and promote cross-cultural understanding. Furthermore, participation in sport can equip refugees with valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, and resilience - qualities that are essential for successful integration into new societies.
However, challenges remain. Access to safe and inclusive sporting facilities is often limited in refugee camps and urban settlements. Financial constraints, logistical hurdles, and bureaucratic obstacles can hinder the implementation of effective programs. Ensuring that programs are culturally sensitive and responsive to the specific needs of different refugee populations is also critical.
SWB's co-convenorship is expected to bring a renewed focus on addressing these challenges. The organization's experience in building locally-led initiatives, training community coaches, and monitoring program impact will be invaluable in ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and that programs are truly empowering for participants. They plan to introduce innovative data collection methods to better understand the specific needs of different refugee communities and tailor programs accordingly.
The UNHCR expressed particular excitement regarding SWB's expertise in advocacy. "We believe that SWB's strong voice and proven track record in advocating for marginalized communities will help us to push for greater recognition of the rights of refugees to participate in sport at all levels," a UNHCR spokesperson commented. "We aim to see refugees not just participating, but thriving, in sporting activities, from local leagues to the Paralympic Games and beyond."
Looking ahead, the Sport for Refugees Coalition, under its new co-leadership, plans to expand its reach to new regions and develop innovative partnerships with the private sector. The goal is to create a global network of support that ensures that every refugee has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of sport.
