GENEVA - The Geneseo boys swimming and diving team delivered a commendable performance at the Section V championships this past Saturday, securing a second-place finish behind dominant rivals Pittsford. While falling short of the top spot, the team's showing signals a program on the rise, fueled by both veteran leadership and a promising wave of young talent.

Pittsford claimed victory with an impressive 456 points, but Geneseo wasn't far behind, amassing 331 points to edge out Fairport's 321. This close competition at the sectional level highlights the increasing strength of swimming programs across Section V and suggests a competitive landscape for years to come. Coach Brian Smith expressed pride in his team's effort, acknowledging Pittsford's strength while emphasizing the excitement surrounding the Geneseo program.

"I'm really proud of our team's effort this year," Smith stated. "We had some great performances, and the kids were really excited to be at Sectionals. We were hoping to be a little closer with Pittsford, but they were just a bit too good."

The meet was punctuated by standout performances and, notably, the breaking of school records. Junior Joe Aguilar led the charge, setting a new school standard in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.74. This impressive feat not only contributed significantly to Geneseo's overall score but also underscores Aguilar's potential for future success, potentially at the state level. Aguilar's versatility was further demonstrated by his first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (22.34) and a close second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (48.40).

Adding to the team's success were sophomores Ethan and Owen Ivers, who collaborated to break the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 1:31.74. This dynamic duo exemplifies the burgeoning talent within the Geneseo program and suggests a strong foundation for future relay teams. The 200-yard medley relay team, comprised of the Ivers brothers, senior Alex LaClair, and Jack DiRussa, added to Geneseo's medal count with a third-place finish (1:46.88).
