Michigan Women Dominate Indiana in Swimming Dual Meet
Locale: UNITED STATES

Ann Arbor, MI - January 12, 2026 - The Michigan Wolverines swimming and diving teams kicked off the new year with a dual meet against Indiana University this past Saturday. While the women's team delivered a resounding victory, the men's squad faced a narrow defeat, showcasing both the team's strengths and areas for improvement as the season progresses.
The women's team asserted their dominance, securing a decisive win with a score of 243-116. This commanding performance signals a strong start to the semester and reinforces the team's potential for continued success. Head coach Maggie Farquhar praised the team's aggressive racing strategy, noting, "We talked about the need to come out and race aggressively, and I think the team did that. We had a lot of great performances, and a really positive start to the semester."
Junior Lena Foresi was a standout performer for the Wolverines, spearheading the team's success with victories in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. Foresi's consistent hard work and dedication were evident in her performance, earning her high praise from Coach Farquhar: "Lena had a great swim today. She's been working really hard, and it's great to see her get the results she deserves." Senior Abigail Wylie and freshman Catherine MacGwire also contributed significantly to the women's team's triumph, driving the early lead and maintaining momentum throughout the meet.
The women's team continued to build on their advantage, consistently claiming first-place finishes across a variety of events. Noteworthy victories included the 200-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, and the 100-yard breaststroke. The 100-yard breaststroke saw a particularly exciting moment, as freshman Catherine MacGwire posted a time of 1:03.44, shattering her previous personal best. This achievement underscores the impressive progress being made by the team's younger athletes.
While the women's team celebrated a well-deserved victory, the men's meet presented a different narrative. Despite solid individual performances, the Wolverines ultimately fell to Indiana with a score of 161-137. Indiana established an early lead and maintained their advantage throughout the competition. Senior Jake Faden was the Wolverines' top performer on the men's side, securing a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. However, the team acknowledged the need for focused improvement in key areas.
"The men's team had some good performances, but we definitely need to work on a few things," Coach Farquhar commented, emphasizing the importance of continued training and refinement. She added, "We'll be back in the pool next weekend to continue our training." This commitment to ongoing development highlights the team's dedication to achieving peak performance throughout the season.
Despite the men's team's setback, the overall outcome of the dual meet showcased the Michigan swimming and diving program's potential. The women's team's resounding victory and the men's team's displayed determination provide a foundation for a promising season ahead. The focus now shifts to continued training and preparation as the Wolverines look to build on these early results and challenge for conference and national recognition. The next meet will be a crucial opportunity to address the areas for improvement identified by the coaching staff and further solidify the team's competitive standing.
