Attorneys for a transgender athlete have urged the Minnesota Supreme Court to allow her to compete in the women's division at powerlifting events, saying she's protected against discrimination by the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

JayCee Cooper, a transgender powerlifter, has appealed to the Minnesota Supreme Court to overturn a decision by USA Powerlifting that barred her from competing in women's events. Cooper, who has been transitioning since 2014, argues that the ban violates the Minnesota Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity. The case has garnered attention as it touches on broader issues of transgender rights in sports. Previously, a district court judge ruled in favor of Cooper, but this was overturned by the Minnesota Court of Appeals, which stated that USA Powerlifting's policy was not discriminatory because it was based on "biological sex" rather than gender identity. Cooper's appeal to the state's highest court seeks to affirm her right to compete in accordance with her gender identity.
