PH football team not going naturalization route, says director
- Following the model that helped Vietnam win the Asean Mitsubishi Electric Cup isn't in the cards for the Philippine men's football team as it looks to build on an improbable semifinal run in the regional competition.
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has decided against pursuing the naturalization of foreign players for the national team, as stated by PFF Director of National Teams Freddy Gonzalez. Instead, the focus is on developing local talent, with Gonzalez expressing confidence in the capabilities of Filipino players. He highlighted the success of the Filipinas, the women's national team, which has shown significant improvement without relying on naturalized players. Gonzalez also mentioned that while naturalization could be considered in the future, the current strategy is to invest in and enhance the skills of homegrown players. This approach aims to foster a sustainable football culture in the Philippines, emphasizing long-term growth over short-term gains.
