Women's Wrestling Officially Added as the 91st NCAA Championship Sport
- NCAA Convention, women's wrestling was voted to become an official NCAA Division I, Division II, and Division III championship sport. The vote comes after several seasons of participation in the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has officially recognized women's wrestling as its 91st championship sport, marking a significant milestone for the sport's growth and recognition. This decision was announced at the NCAA Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, and will see the inaugural championship event take place in 2026. Women's wrestling has seen a surge in popularity, with participation numbers increasing dramatically over the past few years, now boasting over 40,000 high school participants and more than 1,800 college athletes across 150 colleges. The addition of this sport to the NCAA championships is expected to further elevate its status, providing more opportunities for female wrestlers to compete at the highest levels, and potentially leading to increased funding, scholarships, and visibility for the sport.
