Jharkhand CM inaugurates 4th SAAF Senior Athletics Championships

Jharkhand CM Inaugurates 4th SAAF Senior Athletics Championships
The state of Jharkhand marked a significant milestone in its sporting calendar as the Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, officially opened the 4th Senior Athletics Association of India (SAAF) Championships on Thursday. The event, hosted at the JRD Tata Stadium in Ranchi, drew an enthusiastic crowd of athletes, officials, and spectators eager to witness a showcase of regional talent and a platform that could catapult promising runners and field athletes into national prominence.
A Platform for Emerging Talent
The SAAF Championships have long served as a crucial stepping stone for junior and senior athletes in India, offering a competitive arena to test themselves against peers from across the country. The fourth edition of the event featured more than 200 athletes from 10 states, competing across a comprehensive program that spanned sprints, middle and long‑distance races, hurdles, relays, jumps, and throws. The calendar included the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4×100m and 4×400m relays, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw.
Athletes were divided into age categories – senior men and women, as well as masters (over 35 years). The championships aimed to foster a competitive spirit while ensuring the identification of talent that could represent the nation at continental and global stages such as the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and the World Athletics Championships.
Inaugural Speeches and Vision
Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who has championed sports development as a key pillar of Jharkhand’s growth strategy, opened the event with a speech that highlighted the state’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent. “Athletics is not just a sport; it is a discipline that instills resilience and discipline in our youth,” he remarked. “Today, we celebrate the hard work of our athletes, the dedication of coaches, and the support of our community. Let us continue to build the infrastructure and mentorship required to turn our athletes into champions.”
Soren further praised the efforts of the Jharkhand Sports Development Authority and the state’s sports ministry for their collaboration with national bodies to host the championships. He emphasized the need for continued investment in training facilities, coaching staff, and sports science support. The CM concluded by urging young athletes to maintain focus and dedication, stating that “every step you take today is a stride toward tomorrow’s success.”
Key Highlights and Performances
The championships were marked by several standout performances. In the men's 100m, sprinter Prakash Yadav from Patna clocked a time of 10.41 seconds, edging out the favourite, Suresh Kumar, who finished in 10.53 seconds. In the women’s 400m, Shweta Nanda of Ranchi set a new state record with a 54.12‑second finish, outpacing the incumbent champion, Anjali Devi, by 0.25 seconds.
The field events saw noteworthy achievements as well. In the men’s long jump, Dinesh Khatri from Dhanbad leapt 7.86 meters, surpassing the previous championship record. Meanwhile, in the women’s shot put, Anil Kumar of Jamshedpur threw 18.45 meters, establishing a new record for the state. The masters category also witnessed a historic moment when veteran athlete Ram Lal Singh, 48, secured a silver medal in the 800m, a feat that garnered admiration from the crowd.
The relays were a highlight for team spirit and coordination. The 4×100m relay team from Jharkhand finished with a time of 41.98 seconds, securing the gold medal and underscoring the state’s strength in sprinting events. The 4×400m relay saw the team from West Bengal triumph with a time of 3:23.50.
Support from National Bodies
The Championships were organized in partnership with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and the National Sports Development Fund. According to the AFI’s official page (https://athleticsindia.org), the federation has been working closely with state authorities to standardize competition rules, ensure fair play, and provide training resources for coaches and officials. The partnership was highlighted by Soren’s acknowledgement of the AFI’s role in raising the profile of athletics within the state.
The event’s coordination also benefited from the involvement of the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) regional committee, which oversees the integration of national and international sporting events. The IOA’s support in disseminating results and providing accreditation for officials helped maintain the championships’ credibility and alignment with national standards.
Path Forward
With the championships drawing to a close, the focus now shifts to the selection process for national teams and the development of athlete pathways. The results, documented on the SAAF’s official results portal (https://saaftournaments.com/results), will feed into the qualification criteria for upcoming national championships and selection camps for the Indian athletics team.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren reiterated his commitment to expanding sports infrastructure across the state. “Our vision is to transform Jharkhand into a hub for athletics excellence,” he said. “We will increase investment in training centers, establish sports academies, and create scholarships for talented athletes who wish to pursue their sporting careers alongside education.”
Conclusion
The 4th SAAF Senior Athletics Championships in Jharkhand showcased the talent and determination of athletes across the country, reaffirming the state’s role as a nurturing ground for sports excellence. The event not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the collaborative efforts of state authorities, national federations, and the broader sports ecosystem. As the athletes return to their respective training regimens, the promise of future international medals hangs in the balance, fueled by the promise of continued support and investment in athletics at every level.
