  • The 35-year-old Sugano has spent his entire 12-year career with the Yomiuri Giants of the NPB's Central League, and he's the league's reigning MVP after posting a 1.67 ERA in 156 2/3 innings.

The Baltimore Orioles have signed Japanese pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training. Sugano, who has been a prominent figure in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for over a decade, has a notable record with the Yomiuri Giants, where he achieved a 109-57 record with a 2.98 ERA. His signing comes after a period of recovery from elbow surgery in 2022, which limited his performance in the following year. Despite this, Sugano's experience and skill set, including a fastball in the low 90s and a variety of off-speed pitches, make him an intriguing addition to the Orioles' roster. His contract includes opt-out clauses, providing flexibility for both Sugano and the Orioles. This move is part of the Orioles' strategy to bolster their pitching depth, especially after their successful 2023 season where they won 101 games.
