8th edition of Songkristan competition held at Assam-Meghalaya border showcasing Garo culture

  • Umshek village, located along the Assam-Meghalaya border in West Khasi Hills district, came alive on Thursday with the 8th edition of the Songkristan Competition, organized by the Gijang Area A-Chik Cultural Arts and Sports Association.

The 8th edition of the Songkristan competition was held at the Assam-Meghalaya border, celebrating Garo culture. This event, which took place in the village of Rongjeng, featured traditional Garo songs, dances, and attire, drawing participants and spectators from both states. The competition not only served as a platform for cultural exchange but also aimed to strengthen the bonds between the communities of Assam and Meghalaya. It highlighted the rich heritage of the Garo people, promoting unity and cultural preservation through performances that included traditional instruments and folk songs, thereby fostering a sense of pride and identity among the younger generation.
