Al-Attiyah calls for changes to Dakar format after "boring" opening stages

Nasser Al-Attiyah, a five-time Dakar Rally winner, has criticized the format of the 2024 Dakar Rally, particularly the opening stages, describing them as "boring" due to their short distances and lack of challenge. He suggested that the rally should revert to longer stages to maintain its traditional demanding nature. Al-Attiyah, who finished second in the prologue and 11th in the first stage, expressed his disappointment with the current setup, which he feels does not adequately test the competitors' endurance and navigation skills. He also mentioned the need for changes in the route planning to ensure that the rally remains a true test of skill and strategy, rather than just a series of short, less demanding stages.
