  • Haaland's goal against Real sparked controversy after a lengthy VAR check. Officials ruled the goal valid as only his hand was ahead, not an offence.

Erling Haaland's goal for Manchester City against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final was upheld despite an offside controversy. The incident involved a pass from Kevin De Bruyne to Haaland, who was in an offside position when the ball was played. However, the goal was allowed because the ball had deflected off Real Madrid's defender, Antonio Rudiger, which under the rules of football, resets the offside situation. This meant Haaland was no longer offside when he received the ball. The decision was reviewed by VAR, which confirmed that Rudiger's touch was deliberate, thus validating the goal. This ruling was in line with football's laws which state that a player in an offside position is not considered offside if they receive the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays it.
