Pa. Senate passes bill banning trans girls from female school sports

Tuesday's state Senate session involved a lengthy debate over a bill that likely will hit a wall in the Democratic-controlled House.
The Pennsylvania Senate passed a bill on April 10, 2023, with a vote of 29-21, that would ban transgender girls from participating in girls' sports at public schools, from kindergarten through college. The legislation, which has stirred significant controversy, aims to ensure fairness in sports by mandating that participation in sports teams be based on an athlete's sex assigned at birth. Critics argue that the bill discriminates against transgender students and could lead to invasive checks to verify gender. The bill now moves to the state House of Representatives, where its future is uncertain due to a Democratic majority. If passed, it would still require the approval of Governor Josh Shapiro, who has expressed opposition to such measures.
