The landscape in high school sports changed significantly on Tuesday morning as the Florida High School Athletic Association voted unanimously to approve name, image and likeness and create an open championship division in major team sports.

The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has approved a new bylaw that allows high school athletes in Florida to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL), effective immediately. This decision, made during a board meeting in Gainesville, enables student-athletes to engage in endorsement deals, personal appearances, and other NIL activities without losing their amateur status. The bylaw includes restrictions such as prohibiting the use of school logos or uniforms in NIL deals and bans on endorsements related to adult entertainment, alcohol, cannabis, controlled substances, firearms, gambling, prescription drugs, and tobacco. Additionally, schools and their employees are barred from using NIL to recruit or influence a student's choice of school, and athletes must report any NIL deals to their school within seven days. This move aligns Florida with a growing number of states that have passed similar legislation, reflecting a significant shift in high school sports governance.
