NASCAR today announced the appointment of Steve Phelps as Commissioner of NASCAR, the first to be named to this newly created role.
Steve Phelps has been appointed as NASCAR's first-ever Commissioner, a role that positions him as the public face of the organization, overseeing competition, managing relationships with tracks, teams, and media, and handling issues like penalties and appeals. Previously, Phelps served as NASCAR's President, a role now taken by Steve O'Donnell, who has been with NASCAR for 26 years and will focus on strategic growth, business development, and innovation. This restructuring aims to enhance NASCAR's leadership and operational efficiency, with both executives reporting directly to NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France. The changes were announced to better position NASCAR for future growth and to streamline its management structure.
