Mets Could Trade For $14 Million Batting Champion If Pete Alonso Bolts
- The New York Mets need to be ready to recover if Pete Alonso elects to betray New York and sign with another ball club.
The New York Mets are considering trading their $14 million batting champion, Jeff McNeil, if Pete Alonso leaves the team as a free agent after the 2024 season. McNeil, who won the National League batting title in 2022 with a .326 average, has had a less stellar 2023, batting .270 with a .333 on-base percentage and .378 slugging percentage. Despite his dip in performance, his contract, which includes a $13.75 million salary for 2024 and a $15.75 million option for 2025, makes him an attractive trade piece. The Mets, who have been active in the trade market, might look to bolster their roster with prospects or other players if Alonso, their power-hitting first baseman, does not re-sign.
