Spectator killed by stray hammer in youth track and field meet

  • An errant weight thrown by a competitor in a hammer throw event struck and killed a spectator at a youth track and field meet in Colorado, according to officials at the university where the competition was held.

A tragic incident occurred at a youth track and field meet in Suotori, Japan, where a 53-year-old woman was fatally struck by a stray hammer thrown by a 17-year-old athlete. The event took place at the Shizuoka International Athletics 2024 meet, where the hammer, weighing 3 kilograms, veered off course and hit the spectator in the head. Despite immediate medical attention, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. The competition was halted following the accident. The hammer throw area was reportedly separated from spectators by a net and a fence, but the projectile still managed to clear these barriers. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
