Northtowns to Get $50M Multi-Sport Complex
Locale: UNITED STATES

AMHERST, N.Y. (February 6th, 2026) - The landscape of health and recreation in the Northtowns is poised for a significant transformation with the announcement of a $50 million multi-sport complex, slated for completion in 2027. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Northtowns Sports Council, aims to deliver a state-of-the-art facility catering to athletes of all levels, as well as everyday residents seeking to prioritize their well-being.
The complex, sprawling across a 75-acre parcel of land conveniently located off Sheridan Drive in Amherst, is envisioned as more than just a sporting venue. It's being presented as a comprehensive health and wellness hub, designed to foster a more active and engaged community. Detailed plans reveal a diverse range of amenities including multiple basketball and volleyball courts accommodating competitive leagues and recreational play, a spacious fieldhouse boasting an indoor track for year-round training, fully equipped fitness facilities geared towards a spectrum of fitness goals, and adaptable recreational areas suitable for a variety of activities.
"This isn't simply about building courts and tracks," explained Peter Jebb, President of the Northtowns Sports Council. "This is about investing in the health and future of our community. We want this to be the place people come to be more healthy, to learn new skills, and to connect with others. It's a generational investment, and we're incredibly excited to bring this vision to life."
The project's funding model represents a collaborative effort between public and private entities, underscoring the widespread support for this initiative. Erie County is contributing a substantial $15 million towards the complex's development, recognizing its potential for regional impact. The state of New York is also pitching in with a $10 million commitment, further solidifying the project's importance. The remaining funds are being actively pursued by the Northtowns Sports Council through a robust fundraising campaign and appeals for donations. They are actively seeking corporate sponsorships and individual contributions to ensure the project reaches its financial goals.
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz emphasized the economic benefits expected to flow from the new facility. "This sports complex will provide a significant boost to our economy," Poloncarz stated. "Not only will it create construction jobs during the building phase, but it will also generate ongoing employment opportunities once operational. Moreover, we anticipate increased tourism and spending at local businesses as the complex attracts visitors from across Western New York and beyond." Local economists predict a potential increase in revenue for surrounding hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments.
The selection of the Sheridan Drive location wasn't arbitrary. An exhaustive search process was undertaken, meticulously evaluating potential sites based on key criteria such as accessibility - ensuring easy access for residents from various Northtowns communities - visibility, to maximize exposure and attract visitors, and potential for future expansion to accommodate evolving recreational needs. The chosen site offers ample parking and is well-served by existing transportation infrastructure.
Beyond the immediate health and economic benefits, the complex is expected to play a crucial role in promoting youth development. The availability of high-quality sporting facilities will provide opportunities for young athletes to hone their skills, participate in competitive leagues, and foster a lifelong passion for physical activity. The Northtowns Sports Council is also exploring partnerships with local schools and organizations to offer sports clinics, training programs, and educational workshops.
The anticipated completion date of 2027 is ambitious, but the Northtowns Sports Council is confident in its ability to deliver on this promise. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026, with phased openings of various facility components planned throughout the following year. Regular updates on the project's progress will be provided through the Northtowns Sports Council's website and social media channels. Residents are encouraged to follow these channels for the latest news and opportunities to get involved. This complex isn't just a building; it's a community investment in a healthier, more vibrant future for the Northtowns.
