Merritt Island High's wrestling team set to compete at 1A state dual championship

  • Merritt Island High's wrestling team will be competing in the FHSAA state 1A dual wrestling meet that begins on Friday, Jan. 24 at Osceola High School. At the 1A regional dual meet last Thursday, the Mustangs defeated McKeel Academy in the first round of the competition.

The Merritt Island High School wrestling team is preparing to compete in the Class 1A State Dual Championship, marking their first appearance at this level since 2018. The team, led by Coach Joe Blasucci, has shown significant improvement throughout the season, culminating in a strong performance at the regional duals where they defeated teams like Hernando and Lake Gibson. Key wrestlers include senior Sebastian Degennaro, who has been pivotal in their success, and other notable athletes like Nate Sopotnick, Anderson Heap, and Kaden Schaefer. The team's journey to the state championships has been fueled by a blend of experienced seniors and promising underclassmen, all driven by a collective goal to win the state title.
