Staunton native helps Winthrop win first American Cornhole League National Competition

  • Staunton native Luke Bryant is helping Winthrop University's cornhole team reach new heights. The Riverheads grad won the doubles championship alongside his playing partner Josh Quinn at the American Cornhole League National Competition.

Staunton native, Matt Guy, played a pivotal role in leading the Winthrop University team to victory in the first-ever American Cornhole League (ACL) National College Championship held in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The event, which took place over the weekend, saw 16 teams from various colleges compete, with Winthrop emerging as champions. Guy, who has been playing cornhole since he was 12, expressed his excitement about the win, highlighting the significance of the event in potentially elevating cornhole to a recognized college sport. The competition not only showcased the skills of the players but also aimed to foster the growth of cornhole at the collegiate level, with hopes of it becoming an official sport in the future.
