The majority of transgender high school athletes in Virginia won't be affected by the new Virginia High School League (VHSL) transgender participation policy.

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is currently navigating the complexities of transgender athlete participation following an executive order by former President Donald Trump in 2020, which aimed to prevent discrimination based on gender identity in sports. Billy Haun, the VHSL executive director, has expressed concerns about the lack of clear federal guidelines, which has led to a patchwork of state policies. In Virginia, the VHSL has adopted a policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in sports consistent with their gender identity, provided they meet certain criteria like hormone therapy or documentation of gender transition. This policy has stirred debate, with some advocating for fairness in competition and others for inclusivity. Haun highlighted the challenges in balancing these interests, noting that without a unified federal approach, schools and leagues are left to interpret and implement policies that can vary widely, potentially leading to legal challenges and further confusion.
