The Special Olympics New York Winter Games kicked off with an opening ceremony at the Bristol Mountain Ski Resort in Canandaigua, New York. The event, which began on February 23, 2023, featured over 500 athletes from across New York State competing in various winter sports including alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, and snowshoeing. The ceremony included a parade of athletes, the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, and speeches from dignitaries, highlighting the spirit of inclusion and the athletes' dedication. The games not only provide a platform for athletes with intellectual disabilities to showcase their skills but also promote community engagement and support for the Special Olympics movement.
