  • The NFL's competition committee is likely to propose a change to the league's kickoff rules that could raise return rates for the 2025 season, a source confirmed.

The NFL is considering a rule change for the 2023 season that would alter the touchback spot on kickoffs, according to a report by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Currently, if a kickoff is caught in the end zone or downed there, the ball is placed at the 25-yard line. The proposed tweak would move the touchback spot to the 35-yard line, aiming to reduce the frequency of kickoff returns and thereby decrease the risk of injuries associated with these plays. This change is part of ongoing efforts by the NFL to enhance player safety, following previous modifications like moving the touchback spot from the 20 to the 25-yard line in 2016. The proposal is expected to be discussed at the NFL's annual league meeting in March.
