Despite his efforts to repair the damage, the boat's stability was compromised, and continuing the race would have been too risky. Thomson expressed his disappointment but emphasized the importance of safety, stating that he had to make the tough decision to retire from the race to ensure his own safety and the integrity of the vessel. He was in fourth place at the time of the incident.
