  • Last edition's bronze winner Louis Burton has pulled out of the Vendee Globe more than three weeks into the race due to serious damage to his boat, organisers of the solo, non-stop and unassisted round-the-world sailing competition said on Thursday.

Alex Thomson, a British sailor, was forced to abandon his attempt to win the Vendée Globe solo round-the-world race after his boat, Hugo Boss, suffered significant damage. The incident occurred when Thomson's yacht hit an unidentified object in the Southern Ocean, causing a major breach in the hull. Despite his efforts to repair the damage, the boat's stability was compromised, and continuing the race would have been too risky. Thomson expressed his disappointment but emphasized the importance of safety, stating that he had to make the tough decision to retire from the race to ensure his own safety and the integrity of the vessel. He was in fourth place at the time of the incident.
