  • Andrew Turner strikes a pose at The News-Gazette office in Champaign last week. The Monticello boys' golf and girls' golf coach led the Sages to successful seasons this fall, winning News-Gazette Coach of the Year honors.

Andrew Turner, the head coach of the Mahomet-Seymour boys' golf team, has been named the 2024 All-Area Golf Coach of the Year by The News-Gazette. Under his leadership, the team achieved a historic milestone by winning the Class 2A state championship, marking the first state title in any sport for Mahomet-Seymour. Turner, who has been coaching for 13 years, emphasized the importance of team unity and the development of a strong team culture, which he believes was pivotal to their success. His approach focuses on fostering a supportive environment where players can thrive both individually and collectively, leading to not only the state championship but also personal growth among the athletes.
