  • FAMU's "incomparable" Marching 100 band left it all on the field after a performance that hailed it as HBCU Band of the Year by ESPN Events.

The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Marching 100 band was named the HBCU Band of the Year by ESPN following their standout performance at the 2023 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands in Houston. This accolade comes after a year where the band not only showcased their musical prowess but also their resilience, having been sidelined for two years due to a hazing incident in 2019. Their performance was highlighted by a tribute to the late rapper Takeoff with a rendition of "Swag Surfin'," which was part of a larger halftime show that included a medley of hits from artists like Lil Wayne, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar. The recognition by ESPN celebrates the band's return to form and their significant contribution to the cultural landscape of HBCU traditions.
