This ranking has sparked confusion and debate, especially since Illinois finished the 2022 season with an 8-5 record and a victory in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Mississippi State. The Illini's performance last year included notable wins over teams like Wisconsin and a strong showing against Michigan, which adds to the perplexity of their lower ranking. Minnesota, on the other hand, ended the season with a 9-4 record but lost to Illinois, leading many to question the logic behind CBS Sports' decision to rank Minnesota higher. This situation has fueled discussions about the criteria used in preseason rankings and the recognition of on-field results from the previous season.
