Skotheim, who was leading the decathlon, chose to help his compatriot Markus Rooth, who had fallen during the 110-meter hurdles. Skotheim assisted Rooth to his feet, sacrificing his own chance at a medal as he finished fourth. His act of sportsmanship was recognized for embodying the spirit of fair play and camaraderie, highlighting the values of the Olympic movement.
