The College Football Playoff (CFP) is set to expand to a 12-team format starting in the 2024 season, as detailed by CBS Sports. This new format will include the six highest-ranked conference champions, with the top four receiving first-round byes, and the next six highest-ranked teams filling out the bracket. The first round will consist of games played at the home stadiums of the higher-seeded teams, with the quarterfinals and semifinals rotating among the New Year's Six bowl games. The national championship game will continue to be a standalone event. Key dates for the 2025 season include first-round games on December 20-21, 2024, quarterfinals on December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025, semifinals on January 9-10, 2025, and the championship game on January 20, 2025. This expansion aims to increase the number of playoff games, provide more opportunities for teams to compete for the national title, and enhance the overall excitement and competitiveness of college football's postseason.
