  • Vanderbilt was fined $250,000 by the SEC on Sunday for allowing fans to storm the court in celebration of a 76-75 basketball victory over No. 6 Tennessee.

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has imposed a $250,000 fine on Vanderbilt University after fans stormed the court following a basketball game against Tennessee on February 8, 2023. This action was taken in violation of the SEC's policy which prohibits fans from entering the playing surface or field before, during, or after games. The fine is part of a graduated penalty system where the amount increases with each subsequent violation, starting at $100,000 for the first offense, escalating to $250,000 for the second, and $500,000 for any further incidents. This incident marks Vanderbilt's second violation, having previously been fined $100,000 for a similar occurrence in 2022. The SEC's policy aims to ensure the safety of student-athletes, coaches, and officials, and to maintain order during athletic events.
