A high school track runner from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been charged with assault after allegedly striking a competitor with a baton during a 4x100-meter relay race at a meet in Providence High School. The incident occurred when the runner, after dropping the baton, reportedly picked it up and hit another runner from Independence High School in the head. The injured athlete received immediate medical attention and was later hospitalized.
