The high school track runner who allegedly whacked her competitor in the head with a baton is now facing criminal charges despite her claims the incident was all just an accident.
A high school track runner from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been charged with assault after allegedly striking a competitor with a baton during a 4x100-meter relay race at a meet in Providence High School. The incident occurred when the runner, after dropping the baton, reportedly picked it up and hit another runner from Independence High School in the head. The injured athlete received immediate medical attention and was later hospitalized. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed the charge of simple assault against the 18-year-old runner, who was released on a written promise to appear in court. The event has sparked discussions on sportsmanship and safety in high school athletics.
