Ilia Malinin, the 19-year-old figure skater known for his quadruple jumps, has taken the largest lead in the history of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships after the short program, scoring 108.57 points. This performance not only surpassed his previous personal best but also set a new record for the largest lead after the short program, eclipsing the previous record held by Nathan Chen. Malinin's routine included a quadruple lutz-triple toe loop combination, a quad loop, and a triple axel, all executed with high technical difficulty and artistry. His lead of 10.67 points over second-place Jason Brown marks a significant moment in his career, especially as he aims to secure his first national title. This achievement comes at a time when Malinin is also preparing for the upcoming World Championships, where he hopes to improve upon his previous fourth-place finish.
